The Kirkland Transition Academy first opened its doors in September, 2017. An advisory committee was created in January, 2017 to determine other pathways that the district could explore for their special needs students since the Transition Academy had been nationally recognized for its achievements. The advisory committee members, composed of teachers, parents, administrators, and adult agency staff, over the course of six months, provided another choice for students with developmental disabilities.
The new program would model that of the Transition Academy. However, the students would be on a longer pathway to paid employment due to needed additional supports. Volunteer internships would be designed to assess their skill sets and build video resumes.
Northwest Center was selected as the embedded employment support specialist.
